Artists Charts
I’m not just an astrologer, but I consider myself as a hobby artist and crafter as well. Being creative and expressing yourself (and myself) through art is a great interest of mine.
Art in a Chart
When I see creative expression in someone’s chart, I’m keen to let them know even if they are concerned, or bogged down, with their daily grind of work, health, kids and general home life. The two planets most often associated with art are Venus and Neptune which got me thinking about how does Venus and Neptune and their aspects conspire in a birth chart to spark extraordinary creative talent.
Not Only…
I’m not saying that Venus and Neptune must be in aspect for you to be artistic, as I believe that everyone is in their own way, but sometimes it just sticks out as a theme in a chart. As humans we are naturally creative and we can think in abstractions. This ability set us apart 300 000 years ago and still does.
How Art Shows Up
You may have your ideas on how art shows up in a chart, but in this newsletter I’m happy to share mine with you. This week I’ll be looking at the charts of five artists, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Munch, Kandinsky and Bernini.

Join Arwynne and I in this week’s podcast episode as we chat about the potentials between Venus and Neptune and how these planets illuminate the artistic talents of history’s most revered creatives.
Venus and Neptune
Arty Planets
I first want to share how I see this and make a distinction between Venus and Neptune. I believe that Venus, is associated with artistic expressions which can be physically touched like drawings, paintings, sculptures, mosaics and murals. On the other hand, Neptune symbolizes intangible art like dance, singing, music, choreography, film, photography and theatre or the more ethereal qualities of creativity and the emotional depths that art may evoke.
Contrast
This pair of arty planets serve as key indicators of artistic ability, inspiring a deeper exploration into how your understanding of your birth chart. The contrast of these two planets may provide insights into your artistic inclinations and motivations and can unlock hidden creative potentials. Let’s take a look into the connection between your birth chart and artistry, particularly focusing on the roles that Venus and Neptune may play in your birth chart.
What are the Odds?
Benchmark
Okay, so this for my Virgo friends out there…
Let’s just get a bit of a benchmark about how many charts are likely to have an aspect between Venus and Neptune. If we take the orb for a conjunction at 8° and the orb for an opposition at 8°. The orbs for two squares at 8° each, that would be 16°. The orb for two trines at 8° each, that would be another 16°. And the orbs for two sextiles at 4° each, that would be another 8°. This all adds up to (8+8+16+16+8=56) 56° of the zodiac.
Percentage
56 is the number of degrees where an aspect could occur between Venus and Neptune. If we then take 56° as a percentage of 360°, the answer is 15%. Therefore, 15% of all charts, (which is 15 out of every 100 natal charts) will have an aspect between Venus and Neptune. In other words, 15% of the population have an aspect between Venus and Neptune and therefore these people may be inclined to be artistic more than others.
Note
Also note that some people who are artists do not have an aspect between Venus and Neptune, and I’m only considering Ptolemaic aspects although I do later mention lesser used aspects.
Leonardo Da Vinci
Venus Trine Neptune
Leonardo da Vinci’s, chart contains a harmonious trine between Venus and Neptune. This aspect suggests an innate artistic temperament, which manifests in his diverse masterpieces. With Venus in her own sign of Taurus and Neptune in Venus’ other sign, Libra, da Vinci’s capabilities to blend beauty with technical skill shine through his works. His painstaking attention to detail as he ground down mediums like lapis lazuli into the perfect pigment attests to the dedication intrinsic to such artistry.

Wassily Kandinsky
Venus trine Neptune
One of my personal favorite artists is Wassily Kandinsky who is a remarkable figure and an innovator of abstract art. With Venus in Sagittarius trine Neptune in Aries, his artistic expressions flowed naturally, allowing him to articulate vivid color palettes and compositions that pushed boundaries. His work represents the evolution of art as a reflection of societal changes, demonstrating how different color and shapes embody various artistic movements and historical contexts.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Venus square Neptune
Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the master of Baroque sculpture, brought marble to life with breathtaking emotional intensity. He has Venus in detriment Scorpio square Neptune in Leo.

Arwynne believes that his works, such as The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa and David, showcase his unparalleled ability to capture movement, passion and a divine experience in stone. The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa immerses viewers in a moment of spiritual rapture, where the saint’s face conveys both bliss and transcendence. While David is frozen in dynamic action, his body coiled with tension as he prepares to strike.

Michelangelo
Venus quincunx Neptune
Michelangelo’s chart contains a pesky quincunx aspect between his Venus (Aries) and Neptune (Scorpio). This indicating a more tumultuous relationship for the artist and his work. Here, artistic expression comes at a price.
The struggle for creativity can lead to heightened angst which may be reflected in the raw emotion of his works such as the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The overwhelming pressures Michelangelo faced while working on this monumental project encapsulate the agony of artistic endeavor. I believe this may highlight how challenges can serve as catalysts for greatness.

Edvard Munch
Venus quincunx Neptune
The frenetic energy of Edvard Munch, is shown in his iconic paintings “The Scream.” An examination of Munch’s chart provides insight into how his personal struggles and existential thoughts permeated his works. This energy may have harnessed a visceral response that resonates with us today.
Much like Michelangelo, Munch’s quincunx aspect reveals that artistic expression often emerges from emotional turbulence. The unique blend of despair, anxiety and beauty captured in his art offers a raw portrayal of the human experience.
