Solar Arc Directions

This time I’m chatting about one of astrology’s most intriguing forecasting tools, solar arc directions. Once you get your head around them, solar arc directions are simple to use, accurate and can add real depth to your astrology forecasting practice.

Combinations

Personally, I find that solar arc directions really come alive when combined with transits. The blend offers a fuller and more nuanced picture of what is unfolding in someone’s life.

Client’s Charts

That said, I want to be clear and that when I’m working with clients, I never rely on just one technique. I weave together a variety of forecasting tools including transits, lunations and eclipses, the graphic ephemeris, solar arc directions, secondary progressions, and solar return charts. Each one adds a different layer, and together they create a richer interpretation and insight on more levels. And just to get an idea, the diagram below shows how I segment my time when forecasting.

In this article, we’re going to focus on solar arc directions, exploring how they work, why they matter, and how you can use them to pinpoint key turning points and life shifts.

Symbolic Forecasting

Directions

Solar arc directions are one of the two main symbolic forecasting techniques in astrology the other being secondary progressions. They are called symbolic because they do not represent an actual astronomical motion of the planets, like a transit does. Rather they give a symbolic measurement of time applied to a natal chart.

Progressions

The solar arc directions technique, or directions for short, is closely related to secondary progressions. Both techniques use symbolic time measures to move the natal chart forward and reflect the unfolding of your life events.

Differences

The key difference is that in solar arc directions, all the planets and chart points are advanced at the same rate as the Sun’s annual motion (about one degree per year). This makes the technique simple, easy to eyeball, consistent and easy to apply across an entire chart.

Stand Alone

Solar arc directions can be used on their own as a stand-alone predictive method but not usually. However, I find them most effective when combined with transits. Transits describe the current positions of the planets in real time, while solar arc directions show symbolic growth and inner development. Together, they provide both an inner timeline and an outer trigger, creating a fuller picture of potential life events.

Layering

This layering of solar arc directions for psychological themes and growth, transits for outer events allows astrologers to offer rich, multi-dimensional forecasts. For example, a solar arc direction may suggest a significant internal shift, and a transit to the same planet or point might correspond with the actual external circumstances that bring that shift into shart focus.

Development of Solar Arc Directions

History Timeline

Astrological forecasting techniques have evolved steadily over centuries, with different astrologers refining and adapting the practice of directions. Solar arc directions, as we know them today, did not appear fully formed instead they grew out of a long tradition of experimenting with symbolic time measures.

Below is a timeline of key contributions:

Ptolemy: Primary Directions

Claudius Ptolemy outlined the earliest known system of symbolic directions in his Tetrabiblos. Primary directions move the planets and points of a birth chart forward in time at the same rate the Earth rotates (roughly one degree per year of life). This became the foundation for later timing techniques.

Maginus: Secondary Progressions

Maginus expanded on earlier methods and popularized what became known as secondary progressions, where each day after birth is taken to represent one year of life. This method gave us astrologers a new symbolic way to examine life unfolding.

Naibod: Naibod Arc Directions

Naibod introduced a refinement known as the “Naibod arc” which is based on the average daily motion of the Sun (59’08” per day). His approach adjusted the primary direction system, offering a more practical way of timing events.

Placidus: Solar Arc Directions

Placidus brought the system closer to what we now call solar arc directions. His work symbolically advanced all points in the chart by the same arc as the Sun’s movement, creating a unified and simplified technique. This laid the groundwork for modern solar arc forecasting, where every planet and point is moved forward at the solar rate which is about one degree per year give or take. Solar arc directions are now widely used in modern astrology for their simplicity and reliability in predictive work.

Solar Arc Directed Sun

Progressed Sun = Directed Sun

The solar arc directed chart is based on the secondary progression method of day-for-a-year.

The progressed Sun is always at the same position as the directed Sun.

A solar arc directed chart is calculated by taking the position of the day-for-a-year transiting Sun and moving all the planets and points the exact distance (in degrees and minutes) forwards as the Sun. All the directed planets move forward the same distance as the solar arc directed Sun.

Solar Arc Directed Chart

How to Calculate a Solar Arc Directed chart

  • Find the position of the natal Sun.
  • Find the position of the progressed Sun.
  • Find the distance between natal Sun and progressed Sun in degrees and minutes. This degree number is the current solar arc.
  • Move all the planets and points the exact distance (in degrees and minutes) forwards as the progressed Sun.

The Sun’s Daily Motion

Speed

The transiting Sun travels through 360° each year, but it does not move at the same rate each day. The speed depends on the zodiac sign the Sun is transiting. This can affect the solar arc direction calculations.

How far the Directed Sun Moves

Here are some approximate values that the directed Sun will move over the course of your liufe.

  • Age one month old = 05′.
  • Age one year old = 60′ = 1°.
  • Age forty years old = 40°.
  • Age seventy-five years old = 75°.

Equal Openings

Arcs

An arc is part of the curve of a circle.

Planetary Arcs

The degree amount between any two planets in your natal chart is known as an opening.

Solar Arc Length

Each year you will have a wider opening solar arc. At some point, your solar arc distance will equal these planetary openings from smaller to larger openings.

One Hit Openings

For example, if you have a gap of 25° between your Moon and Jupiter, the meaning of these two planets will be triggered when your solar arc distance equals the opening between your Moon and Jupiter of 25°, which will be at age twenty-five. These planetary openings will be important years in line with the urges of the two planets involved.

List Your Openings

It is useful to list all your openings, planet pairs and degrees ahead of time. Not everyone has the same gaps in their natal chart nor has the same pairs of planets at the edges of the gaps.

The Sun’s Orbit

Movement and Speed

During the course of the year the Sun moves slightly quicker through Capricorn each day, and slightly slower through Cancer. The distance travelled by the Sun in fifty years may be slightly more, or less, than fifty degrees on the zodiac. It depends on your Sun’s sign at birth if it is initially moving slowly or fast.

Sun’s Movement

  • The transiting Sun travels 360° in 365 days.
  • The Sun does not move the exact same distance each day.
  • The Sun’s average speed is 59′ a day

Age and Your Solar Arc

The older you are, the longer your solar arc will be. If you are twenty-five years old your solar arc will be around 25°. If you are seventy your solar arc will be around 70°.

Retrograde

There are no retrograde movement in solar arcs as all the planets and points move forward through the zodiac.

The Sun’s Movement

One Day per Year

If we use the yardstick of one day per year of life, then someone aged fifty years old will have their chart moved 50° forward through solar arc movement. Just by looking at the natal chart you can make a judgement surrounding possible events through the simple movement of solar arcs.

Example Ascendant

Any planet 15° above the Ascendant, in the natal twelfth house, will reach the natal Ascendant, by solar arc, in fifteen years. This will ignite the person’s personality, self and ego.

Example Midheaven

Any planet 21° to the right of the Midheaven, and therefore in the natal ninth house, will conjoin the natal Midheaven at around age twenty-one years by solar arc. This will stimulate the urge for status, career and reputation building.

Rectification with Solar Arcs

Birth Time

It follows that life-changing events can be closely timed to a solar arc planet conjoining one of the four angles. The conjoining planet will affect yourself (Ascendant), your marriage or life partner (Descendant), your career and public standing (Midheaven) or your family and home life (IC). If you know of specific years when something occurred in line with the meaning of an angle then you can adjust the natal ascendant to suit. In this way using solar arc direction to help find a correct birth time is invaluable.

Arc Length

Directed Ascendant Calculation

The directed Midheaven is calculated as per the planets, but the directed Ascendant is calculated in another way. With the directed Midheaven degree, simply refer to the Table of Houses for the natal place of birth to find the directed Ascendant.

Interpreting Directions

There are some unique features of solar arc directions:

  • Solar arc directions only occur once in a lifetime.
  • The solar arc directed chart is not interpreted as a standalone chart, it is always referenced back to the natal chart.
  • Solar arc directed aspects between the planets are the same as the planetary aspects in the natal chart.
  • The solar arc Ascendant/Descendant axis can form new aspects with the planets.
  • The solar arc Midheaven/IC axis can form new aspects with the planets.
  • You need to thoroughly know and understand the natal chart in question before you attempt to interpret the solar arc directed chart.

Solar Arc Directed Chart

Interpretation Sequence

Solar arc directions are interpreted by comparing the solar arc directed chart to the natal chart. Typically, you will cast a bi-wheel with the natal chart in the middle and the solar arc directed chart on the outside.

Interpret in the following sequence:

  • Solar arc directed angles changing sign.
  • Solar arc directed angles changing house.
  • Solar arc directed planets changing sign.
  • Solar arc directed planets changing house.
  • Solar arc directed aspects to the natal chart.
  • Solar arc directed contacts to the Aries points

Angles

Directed Angles Changing Sign

What to note with the solar arc directed chart’s angles:

  • The Ascendant and Descendant will change signs in pairs.
  • The Midheaven and the IC will change signs together.
  • The polarity of the Ascendant will change from negative to positive or from positive to negative depending on the signs.

Directed Ascendant changing Sign

  • There will be a new directed chart ruler.
  • Your personal outlook will change.
  • People will begin to see you in a new light.
  • You give off a different first impression.
  • Your face and looks changes over time.

Directed Descendant changing Sign

  • Your approach to relationships changes.
  • The way you relate to others begins to be different.
  • People do not respond to you in the same way as before.

Directed Midheaven changing Sign

  • Your public status changes.
  • Your career may take a new path.
  • The world views you in a different light.
  • Your reputation aligns to the new sign.

Directed IC changing Sign

  • Your private life changes.
  • You view your family in a new light.
  • You review the foundations of your life.

Directed Angles Changing House

Directed Houses

In a year when a directed angle axis changes house it will be a focus on the affairs of those houses. You will become more oriented to the areas of life suggested by the house and there will be a spotlight on the natal ruler of that house.

Directed Ascendant conjoined the 2nd house cusp

This occurs at around age thirty depending on the size of the natal first house.

  • You begin to look for stability and form.
  • The get urge to settle down.

Directed Ascendant conjoined the 3rd house cusp

This occurs at around age sixty depending on the size of the first and second houses.

  • You slowly begin to appreciate your siblings and neighbors.
  • You may wish to revisit your childhood neighborhood.

Directed Ascendant conjoined the IC and 4th house cusp

This occurs at around age of ninety depending on the size of the first quadrant.

  • You focus on the end of life and your twilight years.
  • You begin to return to your family.

Directed Midheaven conjoined the 11th house cusp

This occurs at about age thirty depending on the size of the tenth house.

  • You reach out and build a career network of friends and associates
  • You begin to appreciate those who have stood by you

Directed Midheaven conjoined the 12th house cusp

This occurs at around age sixty depending on the sizes of the previous houses.

  • Your outer life becomes more contemplative.
  • The pace of life may begin to slow down.

Directed Midheaven conjoined the Ascendant

This occurs at about age ninety depending on the size of the fourth quadrant.

  • You begin to return to your initial loves and accept your personality
  • This can be a time of starting a new chapter in life

Uranus Trine Pluto

Uranus Trine Pluto

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: August 2025

Importance

In astrology, some planetary alignments are just extra important than others. Some are more than passing moments because they are milestones in the unfolding story of our world. The upcoming Uranus-Pluto trine is one of those moments.

This rare trine aspect, exact between 2026 and 2028, earmarks a time for us when innovation (Uranus) and deep transformation (Pluto) will hopefully begin to work together in harmony.

Beginners

For those of you now just learning astrology, this is a golden opportunity to observe an outer-planet transit as it builds, peaks and integrates over several years. If you start now, you can track its influence in real time, honing your chart-reading skills and deepening your understanding of how slow-moving planets shape both personal and collective experience.

From the Seed

In this article, I’ll explore the astrology of the Uranus–Pluto trine, revisit the seeds planted in their last conjunction of the 1960s, and outline a Transit Watch Checklist (see below).

With this checklist you can follow this alignment from its first stirrings (unfolding right now) to its final exact pass. If you are an aspiring astrologer then this is your chance to witness history in the making and to see how it plays out in your own chart.

Uranus Trine Pluto

In this week’s podcast episode Arwynne and I chat about the 2025 trine between Uranus and Pluto.

Uranus

Sign Rulership

Uranus rules the sign of Aquarius.

Uranus’ Discovery

William Herschel discovered Uranus on March 13, 1781, and it was the first planet in recorded history to be found using a telescope rather than the naked eye.

Uranus Themes

Uranus is the planet of breakthroughs, originality and the spark of genius. It governs anything unconventional, forward-thinking, or ahead of its time. Linked to modern trends, progressive ideas and revolutionary change, Uranus challenges the status quo and opens the door to us for fresh possibilities.

Often called the Awakener, Uranus jolts us out of complacency, sometimes through surprising events or sudden insights. It represents freedom, individuality and the courage to explore uncharted territory.

In astrology, Uranus’s influence can bring flashes of inspiration, rapid developments and a restless urge to innovate. It is the energy that shakes up old patterns, typically set by Saturn, and invites us to see the world in a completely new way.

Uranus

Pluto

Sign Rulership

Pluto rules Scorpio.

Pluto’s Discovery

Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930, by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The name “Pluto” was suggested and thought fitting since Pluto was the Roman god of the underworld, living in the dark and far-off realm, which was much like the distant, cold planet. The name also honored Percival Lowell, as its first two letters matched his initials (PL) and indeed some astrology programs still use this as the glyph for Pluto.

Pluto’s Demotion

For decades, Pluto was considered the ninth planet, but its small size and unusual orbit raised questions. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union headed by Mike Brown reclassified it as a dwarf planet, along with similar icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt and the asteroid Ceres.

Pluto Themes

Pluto is the planet of deep transformation, regeneration and the unseen forces that shape life. It rules processes of death and rebirth, both literal and symbolic, and guides us through endings which make space for profound new beginnings.

Pluto works beneath the surface, uncovering hidden truths, revealing power dynamics and urging us to face what we might otherwise avoid.

Known as the Transformer, Pluto’s influence can feel intense, all-consuming and often inevitable. It dismantles what is outdated or corrupt so that something stronger, purer and more authentic can emerge.

Pluto governs the cycles of destruction and renewal, collective evolution and the uncovering of deep psychological layers. Its energy invites us to embrace change at our core, although this is not easy and often leading to lasting empowerment and personal rebirth.

Trines

Element

A trine is considered one of the easiest and most harmonious aspects in astrology. It occurs when two planets are approximately 120° apart (orb 8°), usually in the same element (fire, earth, air, or water), which allows their energies to flow together with little resistance.

The Geometry of a Trine

A triangle is the simplest geometric shape that forms a complete plane, with three points creating a stable structure. In astrology, the trine represents one side of an equilateral triangle.

Because all three sides of an equilateral triangle are equal, it is a naturally balanced and symmetrical figure. This built-in balance is a key to the trine aspect’s symbolism and it represents stability, ease, and a natural affinity between the planets involved.

trine-aspect

The Quality of Ease

While a trine often brings smooth cooperation and talent, it’s very ease can sometimes lead to underuse. When everything flows without friction, there’s less pressure to act and opportunities may pass quietly if not consciously embraced.

In Practice

Trines in a chart, highlight areas of life (through the two houses) where growth and progress can happen almost effortlessly. They show where we have an innate gift or a natural support system and when they are activated by transits or progressions, they can open doors to beneficial harmonious developments.

Synodic Cycles

Two Planets

A synodic cycle is the complete relationship between any two planets, measured from one conjunction to the next. The cycle begins at the conjunction, when the two planets share the same zodiac degree, combining their energies in a fresh new way. This point is like the seed moment for the themes that will unfold throughout the rest of the cycle. From there, the faster-moving planet pulls ahead, forming a series of angular aspects to the slower planet.

1965-1966

This diagram is the Graphic Ephemeris for the original three conjunctions between Uranus and Pluto than occurred way back in the sixties in Virgo.

This is the beginning of the synodic cycle which we are expeiencing now through the trine.

Synodic Aspects and Phases

The cycle unfolds through familiar aspects and phases:

  • Waxing sextile (60°): Early opportunities emerge as the seed idea begins to sprout.
  • Waxing square (90°): A “crisis in action” phase when challenges push the original vision to take form.
  • Waxing trine (120°): A harmonious period of growth, integration, and solid progress.
  • Opposition (180°): The full flowering or culmination of the cycle’s themes, often revealing both successes and tensions.
  • Waning trine (120°): A time to consolidate gains and refine what has been built.
  • Waning square (90°): A “crisis in consciousness” where old structures are challenged, leading toward closure.
  • Waning sextile (60°): The final period of adjustment before the next conjunction resets the cycle.

In cases where there are multiple exact conjunctions due to planetary retrogrades, the final conjunction in the series is the one that sets the tone for the entire cycle.

Short Cycles

The shortest synodic cycle is between the Moon and the Sun, lasting about 29 days. Each New Moon marks the start of a fresh cycle, setting the tone for the month ahead.

Long Cycles

When the two planets are slow-moving outer bodies (such as Uranus, Neptune or Pluto) a synodic cycle can last for decades, even centuries. These long cycles mark broad historical eras, shaping cultural evolution, generational change and collective consciousness on a scale far beyond individual lifetimes.

Origin Chart

Uranus conjunct Pluto Origin Chart

The current Uranus-Pluto synodic cycle began in the mid-1960s, when the two planets conjoined in VirgoThis was a rare meeting because Uranus and Pluto align only about every 127 years. At the time their union set the tone for decades of social, political and cultural transformation.

Timing of the Conjunction

Uranus and Pluto were within orb of conjunction from 1962 to 1969, with three exact conjunctions in 1965 and 1966 at around 16° to 17° Virgo. Virgo is an earth sign linked to service, health, labor and the practical details of life. This backdrop shaped the nature of this cycle’s seed energy.

2012-2015

Below is the Graphic Ephemeris showing the seven exact squares from Uranus to Pluto duirng the period from 2012 to 2015.

1960s Uranus–Pluto Conjunction

This was an era of radical awakening (Uranus) fused with deep, systemic transformation (Pluto). Because the conjunctions happened in Virgo, these forces focused on how societies organize work, care for health, manage daily life and refine systems.

Some key manifestations at the time included:

  • Civil Rights and Social Justice Movements: Challenging entrenched systems and seeking equality.
  • Counterculture and youth revolutions: Questioning authority, traditional morality, and societal structures.
  • Technological Leaps: The early computer age, advancements in medicine, the space race and reshaping everyday possibilities.
  • Health and environmental awareness: Begin to take root as people considered the effects of industrialization on their bodies and the planet.
  • Health Awareness: The contraceptive pill became readily available.
  • Labor and Workplace Shifts: Including new attitudes toward worker rights and the role of women in the workforce.

The Synodic Cycle’s Seed Moment

Every Uranus and Pluto conjunction plants the seeds for a new cycle of revolutionary change and structural renewal. The Virgo conjunction’s seed was loosely about systemic reform through precision, analysis and service to the collective good. The turbulent cultural shifts of the 1960s were the sprouting of those seeds, which have been growing and evolving ever since.

Trine

Now, as transiting Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius move towards a trine (2026–2028), we are entering the first harmonious aspect in the cycle since the conjunction. This means many of those seeds planted in the 1960s are ready to bear fruit, not through upheaval (as in the square), but rather through integration, innovation and sustainable change.

Table

I’ve created a handy dandy table below highlighting each main aspect in the Uranus-Pluto cycle as I see it. I’ve added some main info, topics and dates. This is a guide and you can add your insights as the trine unfolds in the new few years.

Uranus Trines to Pluto

Close Encounter

On September 6th, 2025, Uranus comes very close to make an exact trine to Pluto, but it does not perfect. Uranus is at 1°27′ Gemini and Pluto is at 1°41′ Aquarius. The orb is 0°14′ before they part again as Uranus stations retrograde and begins to move away from the partile aspect.

5 Exact Hits

There are five exact trines from Uranus to Pluto. The exact trines between Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius start from July 18, 2026, to May 9, 2028, with five perfect aspect contacts:

  • July 18, 2026 (4°29′)
  • November 29, 2026 (3°32′)
  • June 15, 2027 (6°50′)
  • January 13, 2028 (6°20′)
  • May 10, 2028 (8°49′)

However, the influence builds beginning mid-2025, as the orb of the trine starts to close and the energy begins to flow.

2026-2028

The diagram below is the Graphic Ephemeris showing the five exact trine between Uranus and Pluto that are coming up soon.

Unfoldment

Opening Gambit

These big planetary shifts of the two outer planets set the groundwork for transformative energy almost poised to launch. September 2025 acts as a preparatory phase much like an opening gambit. It may be a bit like static electricity which can feel a little fuzzy on your hand even before you touch the actual metal.

Energy Peak

The peak trine energy will begin in earnest around mid 2026 and will carry on through into 2028 when the final of the five exact trines perfect.

Uranus and Pluto in a Harmonious Trine

Energies

When Uranus, the Awakener, and Pluto, the Transformer, form a flowing trine aspect, their powerful energies will easily work together rather than clash. Uranus sparks fresh ideas, sudden insights and sometimes gives us the courage to break free from old limitations. Pluto provides the deep, enduring transformation that ensures those changes take root and reshape the foundation of our lives.

Profound Innovation

This planetary combination blends lightning-fast innovation with profound, long-term renewal. Uranus opens the door with a jolt of inspiration or an unexpected event and Pluto walks us through, clearing away what no longer serves us so new structures can thrive. Together, they encourage freedom paired with depth, revolution tempered by lasting impact, and personal awakening that ripples outward into collective change.

Exciting Transformation Abounds

During this trine, the breakthroughs that Uranus will no doubt bring are supported by Pluto’s ability to transform systems at the root level. What begins as a spark can become a sustained movement and personal revelations can grow into life-altering shifts. It is going to be a time to embrace both the excitement of the new and the profound empowerment that comes from true transformation.

Who This will Affect

If You Have the Natal Conjunction

If you have the natal conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in Virgo in your birth chart this will likely affect you more than other people who do not have the conjunction. People born in 1964-67 should check for the conjunction. We are looking at people aged about sixty-ish. For you the Uranus Pluto synodic cycle in your chart is unfolding. I use an orb of 8° for conjunctions.

If You Have Natal Planets between 3° to 8° Gemini or Aquarius

If you have a natal planet or point (Ascendant, Midheaven, Node, Part of Fortune or the Vertex) between 3° to 8° Gemini or Aquarius it will closely affect you depending on which planet it is. Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius. Remember these are transit already so you will probably feel the energy beforehand.

If You Have an Aquarius Ascendant

If Uranus conjoins your Gemini Ascendant, between 3° to 8° Gemini, you will have a change in your personal life.

If You Have a Scorpio Ascendant

If Pluto conjoins your Aquarian Ascendant, between 3° to 8° Aquarius, you will experience a personal transformation at this time.

Playing Nicely

The outer planets are playing nicely within this trine now. The Uranus-Pluto trine of 2026–2028 is already beginning to form and now is the perfect time to start watching it in all of your charts. As an aspiring astrologer, this is your chance to observe how two outer planets work together in real time, weaving sudden breakthroughs (Uranus) into deep, lasting transformation (Pluto).

Start Tracking

Start by noting where (in which houses) early Gemini and early Aquarius fall in your own natal chart and in the birth chart of your friends, family and clients. These are the houses where the story will unfold. Keep an eye on planets or points between 5° and 10° of the air signs, as they’ll receive the most direct energy. Watch for events, conversations, and ideas in those areas of life that feel like fresh doors opening. Remember, trines bring ease, so the changes may arrive smoothly, but it’s your awareness which allows you to work with them in an intentional manner.

Watch This Space

By tracking the planetary pressure build-up now, you’ll be ready to witness the first exact trine in July 2026 and follow the arc of this rare alignment all the way to its final pass in May 2028.

This is practical, hands-on astrology-in-action and it’s an opportunity for you and me to deepen both our skills and our understanding of the cycles that shape our world.

I can’t wait to see what happens.

Monthly Overarch: September 2025

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: August 2025

What’s Coming Up

As an astrologer, you always want to pay attention to what’s coming up in the transits. You will want to have a general feel for how the planets will be moving in the next month, the next three months or the next six months. All of this information you will use for every chart you ever do, or forecast for, your clients this year. So it makes sense to have a have some insights on going on up there and what’s coming up next. This time I’ve done my overarch for the month of September, which I do every month.

Horoscopes

Now and again I actually write the full horoscopes for all twelve signs, but not so frequently anymore because monthly horoscopes are so transitional and nobody ever goes back to read horoscopes for say Capricorn in June 2022. So, while horoscopes may be a great thing to have, they are an incredible time and energy drain on me, so I prefer to do the monthly overarch instead.

What I Look For

In my monthly overarches I look at three main things:

  • Sign Ingresses: The planets changing signs.
  • Stations: The planets changing direction.
  • Lunations: The New and Full Moons and in this particular month they happen to be solar and lunar eclipses, and I sometimes also provide the eclipse charts as well.

Mighty Saturn, who previously entered Aries in May, is now retrograding back into Pisces for a final gasp in the sign of the Fish. The Pisces-Aries cusp is a sensitive point in the zodiac because it is the start of the zodiac at zero Aries and the tail end of the zodiac at 29° Pisces.

Who this will affect

Anyone with planets or points at 28° or 29° Pisces will feel the heavy Saturnian presence again. This will not be just once, but again later in February 2026 as Saturn again passes over the zero Aries point this time moving forward.

September 2nd: Mercury enters Virgo

Dignity (+5)

Early in the month, the Messenger of the Gods, Mercury, will enter VirgoThis will be a good thing for all strong Mercury types and all Virgos. Mercury rules Virgo and is supremely strong, confident and effective there. You can find out more about which planets are better in which signs in my Essential Dignities article. The positive side of Virgo nature will now come forward. Additionally, as time goes on Mercury will conjoin any planet you have in Virgo. This energy is likely to present as many conversations, ideas and thoughts in line with the nature of your own Virgo planets.

6th: Uranus Stations Retrograde 1°27′ Gemini

The first week of September we find Uranus is stationing and beginning its annual retrograde cycle. Uranus retrograde periods usually last for about four months. This year Uranus will be reversing until February next year over the zodiac from 1°27′ Gemini to 27°27′ Taurus.

Who This Will Affect

This particular Uranus retrograde period will affect anyone who has natal planets or points between 1° Gemini to 27° Taurus as they will receive a three-hit transit from Uranus to their Gemini and Taurus planets and points.

September 7th: Total Lunar Eclipse

15°23′ Pisces

This month we have a total lunar eclipse bang in the middle of PiscesLunar eclipses happen at the Full Moon when the Moon, Earth and Sun line up perfectly.  The Virgo Sun shines light onto the Earth. Then, as the Moon slips behind the Earth, it enters the shadow cast by the Earth. This business of the planets forming a straight line is called syzygy. This lunar eclipse will last for around 1 hour 22 minutes.

Who This Eclipse Will Affect

Any Virgo with a birthday on September 6th, 7th or 8th will have the meaning this lunar eclipse hard baked into their solar return chart for the next 12 months. Anyone with planets or points at 15° Pisces will feel this eclipse more as well as the Moon in shadow trigger a brief transit to those planets or points. If you do not have either of the above, this eclipse will occur in one of your natal houses where 15° Pisces is found. In this case it is likely to be a more delicate energy rather than a more dynamic energy than if the eclipse point (15° Pisces) contacts you chart directly.

North Node Eclipses

The eclipse chart North Node may be in the same sign as the eclipse or in the adjacent sign. This lunar eclipse is in the same sign as the node, in Pisces, so Neptune rules the eclipse.

North Node Interpretation

Remember, eclipses happen at the Moon’s position. Lunar eclipses at the North Node, are symbolically like the high tide coming onto a beach. As the tide flows in, it deposits driftwood and other stuff on the beach. It brings goodies for you. North Node eclipses bring things to you in the nature of the house in your birth chart they provide new information, insights, friends, situations, or events in your life.

September 18th: Mercury enters Libra

Having dashed through Virgo lickety-split, Mercury makes it second ingress of the month this time into Libra.

September 19th: Venus enters Virgo

Fall (-4)

Venus enters Virgo. This is not a good placement for Venus as it is the sign of her fall which means that Venus cannot express herself well now. Topics of love and money may be picked over and analyzed without resolution. Only as Venus leaves Virgo and enters Libra, in October, will Venusian topics of romance and finance become resolved.

September 22nd: Mars enters Scorpio

Hot Mars goes home as he enters ScorpioThis is a strong placement for the red planet and you can expect to get things done now. Situations which have been lingering will be overhauled as new information is unearthed. Purging old junk will benefit everyone now. If you have planets or points in Scorpio then you will receive a transit from Mars in the following weeks. Take action and expend some effort to sort things out. It depends on which house in your natal chart Mars is transiting exactly what sort of things are likely to be overhauled.

September 22nd: Sun Libra

Sun in Fall (-4)

The equinox in September signals the Sun’s move into LibraThe Sun is not well placed in Libra as it is the sign of its fall. This shows in that the Sun is independent and focused on what it wants, and Libra is the sign of partnerships where consideration for others has to be given. Thus, the Sun does not express itself well here. The spotlight is now on partners, soul mates and your other, or better, half.

September 23rd: Partial Solar Eclipse 29° Virgo

2nd Full Moon in Virgo

There is a powerful solar eclipse in Virgo this month. Solar eclipses are always a huge focus as the Sun and Moon get together.

South Node

In the solar eclipse chart, the South node is in the same sign as the eclipse, which is Virgo. This means the planetary ruler for this eclipse will be Mercury. Remember, eclipses happen at the moon’s position.

Solar eclipse is at the South Node, or symbolically like a low tide washing off a beach. As the tide flows out, it removes driftwood and other stuff from the beach. It takes goodies from you. South Rd. Eclipses remove things from you in the nature of the house in your birth chart where the eclipse occurs.

South Node Eclipses provide release for you. From information, insights, friends, jobs, situations or events in your life. It is the time to let go of what may have been holding you back. This is the moment to free yourself of emotional baggage or limiting beliefs which you perhaps have held onto for too long.

2nd Virgo Eclipse

This is the second eclipse we are experiencing in Virgo this year. The other was last month. Each year one sign is blessed with two eclipses and this year it is the sign of the Maiden’s turn.

Who this Eclipse will Affect

Anyone with a birthday on September 22nd, 23rd or 24th as the eclipse will be baked into your solar return for the next 12 months.  Anyone with planets at 29° Virgo. If neither of the above options is you, then look to the natal house where this eclipse will fall for some ideas on how this solar eclipse may affect you.

Eclipse interpretation

Kite Major Aspect Pattern

This eclipse neatly fits into a kite major aspect pattern. A kite consists of four or more planets, three in a grand trine and the fourth sextile to two of the grand trine planets. When you have a kite, it supersedes the grand trine so you would not interpret the grand trine. The energy of all the planets flows out to the planet, or planets, at the top of the kite. That is the planet which has the two sextiles to it and the opposition from the bottom point planet.

Kite Top Point

This kite has Saturn in Pisces conjoined Neptune in Aries as the kite’s top points. The energy will likely go out here. The solar eclipse is at the bottom point of the kite where the Sun and Moon are. This suggests that the eclipse Virgo energy will be channeled through to Pisces. We could assume some kindness will be found for those less fortunate than ourselves. Small acts of consideration will no doubt be the order of the day. The other two planets in the kite are Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius. These two outer planets started their synodic cycle way back when they were conjoined in the 1960s in Virgo.

September Special Focus

Equinox

This month’s special focus is on the Autumnal equinox (Northern Hemisphere), or the Spring equinox (Southern Hemisphere). This equinox occurs each year when the Sun enters Libra on September 22nd. The Sun is overhead at the equator with zero declination. Now the Sun, on its path, leaves being overhead in the northern half of the Earth and moves southwards and ultimately towards the solstice point in December. This is a part of the annual solar cycle which we experience every year. There is modicum of balance in the zodiac as the Sun enters the equinoctial sign of Libra.

Autumn-Spring

Now Autumn begins in the northern hemisphere and Spring starts in the southern hemisphere. Both seasons (Autumn and Spring) are moderate being neither scorching hot nor freezing cold.

Planetary Energy Overview

Bird’s Eye

It is always interesting to have a Bird’s Eye view of the general energies present each month and to see how the vibe shifts as the planets constantly change signs.

Counting Planets

Count the Sun to Pluto plus Chiron and exclude the Moon. So in all 10 planets are assessed. See the tables below.

Active Cardinal Fire

September begins with all the planetary energy emphasizing the active polarity, the cardinal mode and the fire elementThis combination loosely translates into the sign of Aries.

Active Cardinal Air

The month ends with an energy focus on active, cardinal and air which funnily enough translates to the sign of Libra and where the Sun ends the month.

September Overarch

Autumn

As we move into Autumn, the temperatures will start to drop as the Sun moves inexorably further south below the equator. I hope you have a great month and find some highlights in your life especially at the two eclipse hot spots if they contact your chart.

Patterns In Astrology

Cycles and Patterns

We astrologers love a good pattern. The cycles of the planets:

  • The Earth takes one year to orbit the Sun.
  • The Moon takes one month to orbit the Earth.
  • And the Earth spins on its axis once in 24-hours. Or a day.

The patterns are pretty stable and we can count in them.

Fibonacci

The golden ratio or the Fibonacci pattern is created by the numbers being added to for the next number in a sequence.

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21…

The Fibonacci pattern in nature is found in many animal and plant species.

Plants

Sunflower heads have the distinct pattern of how the seeds are laid out so they spiral out from the center. It appears that this is the best way to cram as many seeds into a circle (the head of the flower) as possible and it is thought that this is why nature does it.

Pineapples

In pineapples their eye seeds spiral up in 13 rows one way and 21 rows the other. One spiral being clockwise and the other spiral anticlockwise, but both are Fibonacci.

Animals

Found in the nautilus shell. The nautilus is a mollusk that lives in the ocean. It grows like many shells in a whirl ever expanding. The chambers of the nautilus are bigger each time. Fibonacci spirals can be found in other shells as well. The point is that the Fibonacci sequence contains the numbers 5 and 8 and these are specifically related to Venus.

Venus Retrograde Patterns

Retrograde 5 in 8 years

The planet Venus describes a pattern that looks like a flower by its retrograde cycle. This pattern is known as the Venus rose. There are five petals in the Venus rose and this is why Venus specifically rules all 5-petaled flowers.

Venus in your Solar Return

Every Year

When you calculate your Solar Return chart, you do it for every year on or near your birthday. The Sun in a solar return chart is always in the exact position as in your natal chart for every Solar return. It is the exact position that makes the Solar Return chart, but the other planets can be in other positions. Now we are going to look at the Venus position in your Solar Return charts. In the subsequent years Venus will be in a different position in each chart.

Eight Venus Positions

Every year after you are born Venus will be in a different position. When you get to age 8, your eighth birthday, Venus is very near your natal Venus position (within one degree). Eight years later, Venus is still within one degree of the previous eight-year position. In fact, from your natal chart, if you calculate your solar return for every 8 years, so at age 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 etc. Venus will infinitesimally move from its natal position and painstakingly slowly creep through the zodiac.

Eight Year Groups

This occurs for every group of eight years. For example, the years you turn 5, 13, 21, 29, 37, 45 etc. will have Venus at a different position to the natal, but a similar position for this set (your 5th cycle) of 8-year cycles.

Starting Positions

There are only eight starting positions that Venus can be in your Solar return chart. Every eight years the pattern repeats. The Venus position is not as exact as the Solar return Sun is, but it is within one degree from eight years ago of direct. Venus’ solar return position slowly slips over the course of your life. This means that there are eight distinct positions which you can monitor.

Venus Signs

Distance

Venus can only be up to 48° from the Sun. This means that Venus will be only one or two signs ahead of, or behind, the Sun. If Venus is in Virgo in your Natal chart, then in your Solar Return chart, it can only be in Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. This means that Solar Return Venus can only be in the five signs near its natal position.

Sun Position

It depends on your Sun degree position. If the Sun is early in its sign before 5° or further in the sign, past 25°, there can only be 4 signs that Venus can be placed in solar return charts. It seems that if your Sun is in the middle of the sign at say, 15°, there may be five signs in which Venus can be placed. Your natal Venus position will be repeated (but slightly slipped) in your Solar return charts at age 0, 8, 16, 24, 36, 44, 52, 64, 72, 80, 88, and 96.

In your 8-year Venus Solar return cycle placements you may frequently have:

  • The natal Venus starting position
  • 3 Venus retrograde positions
  • 4 Venus ahead of the Sun positions
  • 4 Venus behind the Sun positions

What this really means is that Venus has a cycle that repeats every 8 years with a little drift.

The other planets do not.

Solar Returns Charts

You do not have to remain in the same place for these patterns to be expressed.

Venus Return Charts

Love and Money

Of course, if you are truly looking into the Venus profile in your chart regarding love and money, you would cast the Venus return chart itself. This makes more sense. But what we are taking about are the 8 placements found in Venus’ position in subsequent 8 yearly solar return charts.

In a way it’s crazy that this occurs. That the Fibonacci 5-8 that shows up in Venus retrograde motion, is also reflected in the eight solar return starting positions for Venus. And really, it’s not the solar return that triggers this, but rather it is the precise movement of Venus.

Other SR Planets

Repeating Placements

Only the three planets, the Sun, the Moon and Venus have a repeating pattern in Solar Return charts. All the other planets can be absolutely anywhere in the chart. There is no pattern in the solar return charts for Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Overarch

Hidden Patterns

As I said before, as an astrologer I like to see patterns. I find the fact that we only have 8-cycles of Venus in Solar Return charts something interesting that can be followed through and therefore predicted.

Do Your Research

As I said in the podcast, I urge all aspiring astrologers to find what interests them within astrology, which is of course our subject. Find the specific topic that interests you and do some research, dig deeper, explore more and become the expert in the tightest niche possible within astrology itself. Most of the astrology books on my shelf were written 2000 years ago or in the last century. We need these books to learn astrology, but just because things were done one way in the past doesn’t mean that there’s not something new to be discovered.

Davison

I like to reference the Davidson chart readings, which he only discovered in the 1960s, which is a brilliant technique that now every astrology is using. I think every astrologer has something to offer and if you do some research or explore your topic thoroughly you could very easily bring a whole new technique to astrology and to the astrology field in general.

Ready Already?

And perhaps you’re already doing this. Perhaps you are already exploring one particular thing within astrology. It doesn’t have to be complete, and it doesn’t have to be finalized because that’s the nature of research. But if this sounds like you and you’ve got something that you’ve been looking into, I’d love to hear from you and I’d love to get you on my podcast.

If you would be interested, you can read more about being a good podcast guest here. And when you’re ready you can pitch your topic.

Extend Yourself

Forecast

In your astrology journal and using your natal and no doubt multiple solar return charts please do the following:

  • Note your natal Sun position sign and degree.
  • List your 8-cycle (0 to 7) Venus solar return starting positions sign and degree.
  • Note which cycle (0 to 7) will your next Solar Return be.
  • Anticipate your next Solar Return Venus position to within one degree.

Extend Yourself Further

Retrospectively

In your astrology journal and using your natal and no doubt multiple solar return charts please do the following:

  • Cast you next Solar Return. Now reflect backwards to eight years ago and comment on what your life looked like regarding love and money back then? Do you see a pattern?
  • If you are married or in a serious long-term relationship, find the Venus Solar Return cycle (from 0 to 7 years). Note Venus’ position. Now, consider just how your relationship has developed each eight years (in the 0 – 7 cycle) after your marriage or when you started co-habiting.
  • If you have ever filed for bankruptcy, find the Venus Solar Return cycle (from 0 to 7 years). Note Venus’ position. Now, consider just how your finances have fared for each eight years (in the 0 – 7 cycle) after your monetary crisis.

Uranus in Gemini

In this week’s podcast episode Arwynne and I chat about Uranus in Gemini. Listen to our Uranus in Gemini podcast here.

Uranus Ingress Chart

Gemini

An ingress chart is when a planet enters a new sign or house. In this case, Uranus is entering GeminiIf you cast the ingress chart for a planet’s ingress into a new sign, it shows the nature of what will be occurring whilst Uranus is in Gemini. It’s like the birth chart for the period that Uranus will be in Gemini. In our example, Uranus is in Gemini.

Retrograde

Uranus will enter Gemini on July 7th, 2025. It will then station retrograde and go back into. Taurus on November the 8th, 2025. Next, it will then station retrograde and re-enter Gemini on the 26th of April 2026 to remain until 2032.

Uranus-gemini-ingress-chart

Which Ingress Chart?

1st Ingress Chart

July 7th, 2025 is the day of the first ingress of Uranus into Gemini for over 80 years. Personally, I would interpret the first ingress chart as a general theme for the main expression of Uranian qualities. But technically the first ingress chart will only be in play until next April when Uranus makes the final move into Gemini.

2nd Ingress Chart

April 26th, 2026, is the day of the second ingress of Uranus into Gemini for this sign change period. Technically, the second ingress chart in April 2026 will also give some indication of how Uranus will be whilst it passes through Gemini. I like to do a bit of a combination of both, although I do prefer the initial ingress chart which shows the first potential that Uranus has when it enters Gemini.

Research

As an aspiring astrologer, it’s a good thing to do your own research. When the outer planets make these big sign shifts is the time where you could actually do your own personal research. You would cast the chart for the first ingress and then cast the chart for the second ingress and see how the potentials hard baked into both charts show up over the period for which they are indicated.

Ingress Chart Period

To do this research properly you would use the first ingress chart for the next nine months until Uranus moves back into Gemini for the second time in April. Then technically from that point on, you would use the second ingress chart to indicate the nature of Uranus’ passage through the bulk of Gemini.

Time

It really is up to you. Really, how much time do you have to spend interpreting forecasting materials?

Personally, I don’t think there’s a hard and fast rule on this. I do like the initial ingress chart because that is the very first time in living memory, well my memory anyway, that I will experience Uranus in the sign of the Twins, so I like to use the first chart myself.

However, if you have a great interest in Uranus or in Gemini, it makes sense for you to do some further research by using both of these two charts. You could share your information with us a few years down the line when you have decided which one of the two ingress charts more closely reflected what actually unfolded whilst Uranus was in Gemini.

First Ingress Chart

Zero Aries

I’ve set the ingress chart on the zero Aries house system. This means that Aries is on the Ascendant and every house is 30° long.

Aspects Neutral

Uranus is conjoined Venus

Venus is conjoined Uranus in the ingress chart.

Aspect Hard

Uranus is opposition the Moon

The fast-moving Moon is in Sagittarius.

Uranus is semi-square Sun

The Sun recently passed the summer solstice (June21st) and is in Cancer.

Aspects Soft

Uranus Trine Pluto

Interestingly, Uranus has moved further ahead of Pluto and is now at the trine aspect. This synodic cycle is sourced way back in the 1960s at the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto. If you recall, we all experienced the seven-hit square between Uranus and Pluto around 2012. Now as Uranus has moved into a soft air trine with Pluto, things should ease up for people who were born in the 1960s and have the conjunction in their natal charts.

Uranus sextiles Saturn and Neptune

Note that both Saturn and Neptune are conjoined in Aries.

Outer Soft Aspects

These three soft aspects are very interesting because they will be in orb for quite a long period during the summer of 2025. They will pop up in your main transit information for June, July and August as background energies.

Cosmic Force

As astrologers, we do pay attention to outer planet sign changes. When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto change signs as all three have done recently, it shifts the backdrop, or background noise, to all our astrology work. The Uranus ingress into Gemini is no exception. During 2025 and 2026, we’re going to be paying a lot more attention to what unfolds as “The Awakener” moves through the sign of the Twins.

Podcast

In this week’s podcast episode Arwynne and I chat about Saturn almost conjoining Neptune this year and actually doing so in 2026.

Listen to our Saturn conjoining Neptune podcast here.

saturn-neptune

Close Encounter

Orbs Matter

On July 15th, 2025, Saturn moves tantalisingly close to Neptune, but it doesn’t quite make the conjunction. At this point, the orb between the pair squeaks in at 0°12′. Afterwards Saturn, moving retrograde, quickly moves away from Neptune thus widening the orb.

Synodic Chart

Cycle Beginning

Synodic cycles begin when any two planets conjoin. For example, every month when the Moon comes round to the Sun, we get the Moon / Sun new synodic cycle starting. When the superior planets conjoin each other, it carries more weight globally and historically because they have far longer cycles, which is quite interesting as well. The synodic cycle between Saturn and Neptune is typically around 36 years.

Calculation

I have cast the synodic chart for the exact moment that Saturn conjoins Neptune in February 2026. We can have a look at the main features of this chart to see some themes which we can anticipate unfolding as Saturn conjoins Neptune.

Neutral Aspects

Saturn conjoined Neptune at 0° 45′ AriesAlso note they have the aspect of declination of the parallel, so this is a double-whammy conjunction.

Soft Aspects

Interestingly enough, with the conjunction between Saturn and Neptune there are only soft Ptolemaic aspects. The two easy aspects are a sextile Uranus and a sextile Pluto. Additionally, the chart does contain a mini-grand trine between Uranus trine Pluto and the Saturn Neptune conjunction.

Hard Aspects

There are no hard aspects to the Saturn Neptune conjunction.

Minor Aspects

I would also note that there is a minor aspect, a semi-sextile, from the Saturn Neptune conjunction to the Sun. This may or may not have some influence on this cycle.
