11th House

We’re continuing on about house and this time with the 11th house, a succedent house,  in your chart. You can find out more about houses in general here.

The 11th House

Themes

The 11th house in your birth chart broadly shows your social life, friendships, group associations and aspirations. This area of life represents your role within society and the connections you build throughout your life. To understand the different areas of the 11th house can provide you with some insight into how you interact with the world and the types of people who surround you.

The 11th House Cusp

The sign on the cusp of your 11th house reveals how you approach friendships, social circles, and networking. The ruling planet of this sign (the house ruler) gives further insight into how you engage with groups, organizations, and society at large. If the sign on the cusp has planets and the next sign as well, there will be differences in each planet’s expression in line with their sign, even though they are both in the same house. If the house ruler is in the house, it gains strength and influence.

Planets in the 11th House

Planets found in the 11th house influence the nature of your social interactions and the types of people you attract.

For example:

  • The Sun here indicates a leadership role in groups.
  • The Moon suggests emotionally supportive friendships.
  • Mercury brings intellectual connections and networking skills.
  • Venus attracts harmonious relationships and artistic associations.
  • Mars indicates dynamic and energetic social involvement.
  • Jupiter expands your network, making you popular or influential.
  • Saturn may bring responsibilities within groups or challenges in friendships.

11th House Transits

Planets

When planets transit your 11th house, they stimulate you to seek out friends in the nature of the planet. Multiple transits suggest you will have a busy social life for that period when the planet is in transit. Discover more about the people in your houses.

Friends and Social Circles

Close Friends

The 11th house represents the core and sometimes lifelong friendships that shape your life. These can be long-term companions or people who share your aspirations.

Online Friends

Social media connections, such as those on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, also fall under the domain of the 11th house as “friends”. Personally, my definition of a friend is someone who has seen you in your bare feet.

Professional Associates

Professional colleagues are here too. People you engage with professionally, whether for networking, collaborations, or shared projects are shown in your 11th house.

Collaborators

Anyone with whom you collaborate, or get together with for a purpose, can be seen in your 11th house.

The Collective

This house represents your relationship with society as a whole and your contribution to the greater good.

Social Groups and Communities

Social Butterfly

If you have prominent placements in the 11th house, you may find yourself at the center of various social gatherings. It is likely there is one group per planets so some people will be more socially active than others.

Common Interest Groups

Clubs and organizations based on shared passions, such as photography, astrology, or gaming are shown here.

Book Clubs

Literature-based social gatherings align with the 11th house themes of shared learning and intellectual exchange.

Teammates

If you participate in team sports, like hockey or football, your teammates are reflected here.

Troupes or Performing Groups

If you are part of a dance troupe, theater company, or musical band, they, and the people in them, are represented in your 11th house.

Aspirations and Ambitions

Aspirational People

In your 11th house you will find those who connect with you for professional growth or networking benefits.

Mentorship and Guidance

Whether you seek mentors or become one, like in a algebra revision group, these relationships are influenced by the 11th house.

Business and Financial Networks

Income from Business

If you have your own business (10th house), and particularly one you started yourself, the financial returns from that venture are typically reflected in your 11th house.

Professional Networks

Platforms like LinkedIn and industry-specific networking groups, like Meetups, also fall under the 11th house. Actually Arwynne (my podcast co-host) and I met in a Meetup group for astrology which I had started in the city.

Cohorts

Those people who started their journey with you, whether in college, a professional setting, or an entrepreneurial venture, are also represented here.

The 3rd House

The 3rd House

Author: Alison Price   –   Updated: February 2025

The 3rd House

This time I’m looking at another of the twelve houses and that is the 3rd house. The 3rd house is part of basic natal astrology as houses fall under the four cornerstones of chart interpretation, which are signs, planets, houses and aspects. As an aspiring astrologer, it makes sense for you to understand which areas of life are represented by each house. Then if your client comes with a question about say, the people next door, you know exactly to zoom into the 3rd house for some insights of their relationship with their neighbors.

Strong 3rd House Criteria

I believe a strong third house is one in which:

  • There are at least three planets, stellium or nay.
  • The sign on the cusp of the 3rd house is ruled by the chart ruler, the Sun (Leo) or the Moon (Cancer).
  • There is a focal planet in a major aspect pattern such as a T-square, yod, Thor’s hammer (Finger of the World) as this planet is at the sharp end and draws attention.

You can listen to our podcast episode on the 3rd house.

The 3rd House in Astrology

Type of House

The 3rd house is a cadent house, meaning it can be a quieter place.

Hemisphere Placement

Northern Hemisphere

The 3rd house lies below the horizon, making it part of the private, introspective side of your chart in the Northernhemisphere.

Eastern Hemisphere

This house falls on the self-oriented left side of the chart, highlighting personal perspectives and independent thinking of the Eastern hemisphere.

Quadrant Position

The 3rd house is part of the 1st quadrant, emphasizing personal development and self-awareness.

Triple Division

Located in the 1st triple division (“me”), the 3rd house contributes to self-expression through speech, writing and thought processes related to what you want..

Themes of the 3rd House

General

The 3rd house in astrology governs communication, learning and everyday interactions. It represents how you engage with the world on a daily basis, including your relationships with siblings, neighbors and your local environment. I’m going to share some main themes of the 3rd house now:

Siblings and Extended Family

The 3rd house reflects your relationship with siblings, cousins and those in your family of the same generation to you. It can indicate whether you have a strong bond with your brothers and sisters or if there are challenges in these connections. This house also represents sibling rivalry, cooperation and shared experiences growing up.

Neighborhood and Local Community

This house is closely tied to your immediate surroundings, including your neighborhood, local community and even your neighbors. It shows how involved you are in community activities, whether you feel connected to your surroundings and your general experience of daily life in your local area.

Early Education and Learning Style

The 3rd house reveals your early schooling experiences, the way you learned as a child and your interactions with teachers. It also relates to primary education, school friends and how easily you absorbed information. If you struggled in school or excelled in certain areas, these patterns can be seen in this house.

Travel

Short-distance travel and running errands fall under the 3rd house. It reflects your habits regarding short trips, weekend getaways and how you navigate your city or town. Traditionally the astrological definition of “short distance travel” is as far as a horse can go in one day which I believe is about 50km (31 miles) give or take a whicker. Whereas the 9th house, “long distance travel” represents journeys of more than 50km (31 miles), or further than the distance which a horse can trot in a day including international travel.

Weekend Away

A weekend away, less than 50km (31 miles) distance and staying inside your country, is 3rd house travel. If your weekend away crosses an international border, it is a 9th house experience, even if you travel less than 50km (31 miles).

Commuting and Transportation

This house describes how you move through your local environment and you when you are out-and-about beetling around near home. It reflects your habitual routes and how you navigate your city or town. It also covers routine trips such as grocery runs, school drop-offs and visiting nearby places like schools and libraries. Your usual mode of transport vehicle be it skateboard, bicycle, roller blades, taxi, Uber or your car in particular, is represented by the 3rd house.

Communication Style

The 3rd house plays a major role in how you express yourself, whether through speech, writing, texting, or on social media.

It represents:

  • How you speak in conversations.
  • Hesitations, lisps, stuttering and the use of filler words – like, ah, um and er.
  • Your listening skills.
  • Your preferred communication methods, such as phone calls, emails, or quick texts.
  • How you interact on social media platforms and nowadays with your emoji use 😊, tweeting or messaging.

A strong 3rd house suggests an active mind, curiosity and ease in social interactions, while challenges here may indicate some difficulty in expressing thoughts clearly.

Extend Yourself

Natal

If you are trying to understand the 3rd house here are some of my ideas on how to extend yourself into understanding more.

Using your birth chart and your astrology journal, please do the following:

  • Write “The 3rd House” at the top of the page.
  • List any planets in your 3rd house.
  • List any points in your 3rd house (Lunar Nodes or the Part of Fortune).
  • Note the sign on the cusp of the 3rd house.
  • Note the house planetary ruler (the planet(s) that rule the sign on the cusp of the 3rd house).
  • Write a brief interpretation of your 3rd house. Mention the sign on the cusp, whether there is an intercepted sign within the house, any planets or points within the house and at this point you can look to your third house ruler’s complex and see how well it is placed (or not) in your chart.

Extend Yourself Further

Transits

  • Find the next planet that will enter and transit your 3rd house.
  • Note the date of the house ingress (when it enters the 3rd house).
  • Note the date of the house egress (when it leaves the 3rd house).
  • If you have planets in your third house, find the exact dates for the conjunctions from the selected transiting planet to your 3rd house planets.
  • Write a brief interpretation of this transiting planet and explain how you may expect it to express itself in your life (250 words).

Keep in Touch

I think that the 3rd house inspires us to embrace curiosity, communicate with clarity and foster meaningful connections within our daily lives. It encourages the origin of our lifelong learning, open expression and active engagement with the world around us. The 3rd house is not the first place you would likely look in any chart reading, but it will add support and insights to the main themes shown in the chart as a whole.

The People in Your Astrological Houses

The People in Your Astrological Houses

Author: Alison Price   –   Published: October 2024

People of the Astrological Houses

Where’s Waldo?

Years ago and thinking about people, when I first started learning astrology and particularly the astrological houses, I discovered that in the 3rd house are your siblings, which means your brothers or sisters. So, I looked in my third house and there I had Mars and Venus which were supposed to represent my brother and sister.

And I thought, “Gosh this astrology lark is very clever” because I have one brother (Mars) and I have one sister (Venus) and I thought, “This is brilliant!”

To me, this perfect alignment between what the chart said and what was real for me was one more indicator about why I should learn astrology and how astrology is so great.

Of course, the more I dug into the planets in the houses which represent the people in our lives, I realized that there is a subtlety to these interpretations. This what I’m going to be chatting about today.

When reading an astrological chart, frequently you want to know about people in your life and where they may be represented in your birth chart. This is a quick guide to most of the people that you will encounter in your life and the houses in which you can find them. Any planets in these houses will suggest the energy of the type of person within the house.

Example: 7th House

For example, if you have three planets in your 7th house of marriage, it suggests that you will be married or have close personal relationship with three specific people who are of the nature of the planets themselves.

The first partner will be indicated by the planet that is most clockwise in the house. This could also be said as the planet that would rise first over the Ascendant to the planet nearest to the house cusp on the clockwise side. The second planet suggests the second partner and the third planet suggests the third person. This goes the same for any business partners as well.

Vacant Houses

If a house is empty and has no planets, it doesn’t mean that those people-of-the-house do not exist in your life, but rather you would look to the ruler of the sign on the cusp of the house, as that planet will then be indicative of these types of people in your life.

Think about it, not everyone has a planet in the 1st house, but everyone is alive and has a body, which is represented by the 1st house.

Vacant houses suggest that the focus of the person’s life will not be in a place where the planets are not. Where the planets are indicates where the individual will bring focus to that area of their life and the people within in it.

Example: 5th House

If you do not have planets in the 5th house of children, it does not mean that you will not have kids, but that they may not be the be all and end all of your life experience. Your offspring could easily be a pleasure and not cause unnecessary concerns for you. Your focus in this lifetime will be where your natal planets actually are.

Overview

Here I’ve given you some ideas I know about how to find the people in your life through the astrology chart.

If you are a consulting astrologer dealing with clients who perhaps bring up issues surrounding their sister, their vet, their lawyer or whomever, you will know in which house to explore to find indications around how that person will impact your client’s life.

As you interpret the birth charts of your clients there will be other people who crop up who may not be on this list, but there is always a way to work them out through derivative houses. Or you can just consider what role that person would be playing in your client’s life.

I hope you enjoy this article about the people in your chart. And it gives you something to think about during the next week.
